RTK vs. PPK for drone surveying

Two ways to get centimeter positions, and when each one breaks down.

By The Best Survey Drones team · Oct 23, 2026

Both RTK (real-time kinematic) and PPK (post-processed kinematic) correct the drone’s GNSS positions using a nearby reference: a base station or a network. Both can give centimeter-level camera positions, which reduces how many ground control points you need. The difference is when the correction happens.

RTK: corrected in flight

With RTK, corrections stream to the aircraft during the flight over a radio or cellular link. The appeal is immediate feedback: the controller shows whether the aircraft has a “fix”. DJI’s Matrice 4E is rated at 1 cm + 1 ppm horizontal and 1.5 cm + 1 ppm vertical with an RTK fix.[3] The weak point is the link. Lose cell coverage or radio line-of-sight in a valley and you lose the fix for part of the flight.

PPK: corrected afterward

With PPK, the aircraft logs raw GNSS data and you correct it in the office against base-station logs. There’s no live link to drop, which is why fixed-wing makers favor it for long, far-reaching flights. Wingtra quotes 3 cm RMS absolute accuracy with PPK for WingtraRAY.[5] The cost is an extra processing step and having to wait until you’re back in the office to know whether the data is good.

Which to use

  • Small sites with good coverage: RTK, for speed and confidence on site.
  • Remote or large areas: PPK, or RTK with PPK as a backup if your aircraft logs raw data.
  • Always: independent checkpoints. Neither method proves accuracy on its own.

Ground control isn’t dead

RTK and PPK reduce how many ground control points you need, but they don’t eliminate checkpoints. A handful of well-distributed targets, measured with a rover, is how you show a client the map meets spec, and how you catch a bad base coordinate before it ruins a deliverable.
